What are the top tips for young women to succeed in today’s world?
According to Chloe Shorten successful Corporate Affairs businesswoman, wife of Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten and daughter of Australia’s first female Governor General, Quentin Bryce:
Be bold and make mistakes. Failure is a good thing, it teaches you new things and know that as women, everything will be okay.
There will be many speed bumps in the future. It’s about how you handle it that matters.
Embrace mistakes and keep learning about yourself. Messages about women in the media do not represent who you are or who you want to be.
Ms Shorten shared this advice to students on a recent visit to Nagle College, Blacktown accompanied by Federal Member for Greenway Michelle Rowland.
With a focus on getting girls more involved in Science and Technology, she encouraged the Nagle students to pursue their goals, particularly in the areas that are typically male dominated.
Nagle College, a Catholic girls’ secondary school, is already bucking the trend when it comes to this area having introduced Engineering for students for the first time this year.
Many of the student leaders said they felt empowered by the visit.
‘As a role model for young women, Ms Shorten has inspired me to persevere in achieving my goals and to be the best leader I can be,’ Year 11 student Georgia Peterson said.
Year 12 SRC representative Sarah Cefai add that it was encouraging to hear stories of how women in Australia are increasingly in positions to make a real change.
‘She has helped me to realise that there are no limits to what I would like to achieve,’ Sarah said.
