Andrea Abreu, with the assistance of her friends, Marvel Gebrael and Jessica Yew, recently transformed a Breakout room in the library into an mini galaxy as an illuminated escape for a temporary art installation.
The artwork, named ‘Cosmic Allegiance/Alliance’ features a variety of ornaments coming together to create a greater image. Celestial pieces such as hand-painted planets, origami stars, glow sticks and fairy lights align to create a subtle face of a girl. This in turn can create a variety of interpretations and, additionally, holds just as many meanings.
It can represent how humans can be conceited, thinking they are the centre of the universe. It can be interpreted to represent how everything and everyone in the universe was made for a purpose and are just smaller parts of a greater plan.
It can show how we need to look from a different perspective in order to see the meaning behind the universe/existence. How some people want to explore and become a part of the universe. How some aspire to be as great as the heroes drawn in the stars. It can communicate how we are made from stardust and how we are connected to the universe.
Some students have taken to calling the girl ‘Mother Space’. What do you think she represents?
