Bishop’s Awards celebrate student excellence across Parramatta Diocese

12 Sep 2025

Bishop of Parramatta Student Excellence Awards at St Patrick's Cathedral.

The annual Bishop of Parramatta Award for Student Excellence honours Year 12 students who demonstrate strong leadership, a spirit of service and a lasting impact on their school community.

Held on Thursday 4 September at St Patrick’s Cathedral Parramatta, the event was attended by parents and carers, school representatives, local community members and special guests from Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) and the Diocese of Parramatta, all gathered to support and celebrate the achievements of exemplary school leaders.

“The many people represented here tonight reminds us that education is shared work - a partnership,” said Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mark Smith. “Together, we place our gifts at the service of something greater than ourselves: the flourishing of young people and the mission of the Gospel.”

Awarded by Most Rev Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, each recipient was nominated by their school principal for their embodiment of Catholic values and their positive impact on the life of their school. The awards recognise excellence across a wide range of areas, including academic achievement, sporting achievement, creative and performing arts, social justice, vocational education and community involvement.

Mark Smith congratulated the recipients for demonstrating the qualities of tomorrow’s leaders.

“These awards are not simply markers of academic success; they affirm something deeper - your readiness to be people for others and active contributors to a world that is in great need of hope and transformation,” said Mark Smith.

Bishop Vincent shared an inspiring reflection on what true excellence means, and commended the award recipients for their perseverance and unwavering commitment to their school communities.

“It is right and just that we as the Diocesan family recognise excellence, which is achieved by hard work, discipline, dedication and enquiry,” said Bishop Vincent. “The application of these virtues is rooted in the teaching of Christ and it is the cause of celebration tonight.”

📍 Year 10 Geography Field Trip Our Year 10 students had a fantastic day exploring Pyrmont as part of their Geography unit, Changing Places. They conducted a field study to investigate how the area has evolved over the past century, observing the impacts of urbanisation firsthand. Connecting classroom theory with real-world examples made for an engaging and insightful learning experience. 🌆📚 A great day of discovery and learning beyond the classroom! 👟🗺️✨

🌍 Socktober Launch Event ⚽️ Inspired by the creativity and resilience of children around the world, our students kicked off Socktober by crafting their own Sockballs, made from recycled socks, T-shirts, and other materials. This year, the Socktober campaign focuses on Zambia and the Catholic Mission's work to provide the five essentials of life: food, water, shelter, healthcare, and education. 🍽️💧🏠🩺📚 Through this hands-on experience, students gained valuable insight into global challenges, the importance of the resources we often take for granted, and how they can make a meaningful difference.

On Tuesday, eight Nagle College Leaders attended the LIFTED GO! event at Western Sydney HQ in Rooty Hill 🙌✨ The students engaged with the mission statement of Noticing 👀, Knowing 🤝, and Serving ❤️. They were encouraged to reflect on their own times of need, who has supported them on their journey, and to give purposeful attention to those in need—particularly people experiencing homelessness Bishop Vincent shared powerful insights about our shared call to justice and the importance of empathy and respect. He reminded us that those experiencing homelessness are children of God and called us to be signs of hope on the edge of society. Our students are called to be agents of Noticing, Knowing and then transition into Serving and will be planning some Social Justice Initiatives in the coming weeks.
